Issaquah wildlife control Tip of the Month:

How big do snakes get?
There is a common misconception that people often have about the size of snakes. Some people believe that a snake irrespective of its species can grow to an anaconda-sized snake. Is this true? Of course not! Although snakes are known to grow to a very large size, this is determined by the gender, species, and the environmental factors. A simple example that backs this up is the size of a corn snake. A corn snake is indeed a big snake, but irrespective of its gender and environmental conditions, it can never grow as big as a Burmese python. This can never happen no matter how much food you give to it or how old it gets. Each species of snake is limited to its distinctive size. So how big can snakes get? Right here, we will be taking you through some of the most common species of snakes out of the thousands of species of snakes that can be found across different parts of the world.

The longest known snake in the world
When it comes to snakes with an incredible length, pythons and anacondas are known to grow very long and are considered the longest species of snakes. Although other snakes like Boa constrictors and king snakes also grow to a large size.

On average, both pythons and anacondas are known to grow to an average length of 24 feet. But in some exceptional situations where they have an abundant source of food, these reptiles can grow up to 26 to 30 feet. This is a record no other species of snake has been able to beat. These two species of snakes are no doubt the largest in the world.

A sub-specie of python known as the Reticulated Python is considered the largest python. This reptile’s natural habitat is in the swamps of the Malaysian islands. Reticulated Pythons are known to be able to hunt and take down animals as large as deer.

The Red Tail Boa is another snake with a large size that will fascinate you. This snake can grow as long as 6 to 8 feet and can take down prey way larger than the size of Its head. This species of Boa is also a jungle master that ought to be feared.

The biggest known snake in the world
When it comes to weight, Anaconda takes it all. These snakes can be considered the heaviest snakes in the world due to their weight. One of the largest species of Anaconda in the world is the Green Anaconda whose habitat is in the Amazon rainforest in South America. There is no particular limit to how much this species of snake can weigh as their natural habitat is usually inaccessible. But there are reasons to believe that their large size is a result of the availability of an abundant food source. These reptiles don't hesitate to hunt down animals as large as deer.

The average weight of an Anaconda is between 250 to 400 pounds. And there have been reports these snakes can even become bigger in the wild. On average, Pythons are longer than Anacondas, the only reason why Anacondas are bigger is that they have a huge appetite compared to Pythons.

In conclusion, the size of a snake is highly dependent on its species, its age, and its natural environment. All these factors determine to a large extent how big a snake will be.
